Paver driveway will not crack as concrete slabs frequently do. If a repair ever does become necessary, stained or broken pavers can be easily replaced without ugly patches. With professional installations, your pavement could last for a lifetime. You can choose from a variety of sizes, shapes, textures and colors of pavers to create a driveway that is affordable and will return its value to you and has a high-end look that reflects your personal style. You'll love the instant curb appeal. Optional, sealing the concrete pavers every 5 years will help keep their color looking like new, and will protect them from grease and oil stains, as well as many things that people drop on patios at parties and BBQs. A special formulated sand can be applied in between the paver joints that prevents insect infestation and inhibits weed growth. Getting Started: When it comes to considering a driveway, one of the most important decisions is the size. An ideal parking space for a typical auto is an area 10' wide by 20' long. As a Homeowner, you need to make a realistic evaluation of your future use of the driveway with respect to the number and size of vehicles that will be using. Will your immediate family members be the only ones using the driveway or will you be receiving regular deliveries and pickups by large vehicles as well? Load bearing requirements, turning radius, and sight distances will all be different for small versus large vehicles. For safety sake, it is best if your driveway and parking area is designed so that vehicles can be driven forward out of the driveway rather than backed out onto the street. This often necessitates either a circular drive or a turnaround area. Paver Products: There are three type of driveway pavers: Concrete Pavers, Brick Pavers and Stone Pavers. The type of pavers you choose determines cost of materials and installation because they differ in application, design, technical standards and more. Concrete Pavers are made of cement, aggregate, pigments and dyes. The color selection of Concrete Pavers is very broad and, depending on the manufacturing process, can hold up for a very long time. Concrete Pavers are very strong and will work for driveways and even roads. Color sealants may also be used to prevent Concrete Pavers from losing their color. Brick Pavers are made from clay and shale materials and cost slightly higher than Concrete Pavers due to their higher material cost and manufacturing process. These raw materials are baked at up to two thousand degrees at the manufacturing plant. Brick Pavers have their own natural properties that make them ideal for producing hard wearing and extra strong Brick Paver products. Brick Pavers colors have a deepness and warmth because they contain the natural color of the clay and shale materials and will maintain their true color for a very long time. Brick Paver does not have the extensive color variety offered by Concrete Pavers. The colors of the Brick Paver are earthy, from light, moderate and darker red tones. Stone Pavers are made by Mother Nature over millions of years of natural formation and are extracted from the earth at stone quarries. Stone Pavers are undeniable for adding natural beauty to home surroundings and landscaped gardens. Stone Pavers are cost higher priced than brick and Concrete Pavers because the pavers have to be mined from the earth at stone quarries. Stone Paver driveway have limited applications due to their hardness, strength and density issues. Example, granite Stone Pavers are strong enough for driveway paving, whereas blue Stone Pavers would not be strong enough for driveway paving. Patio, pool deck and sidewalk applications are more suited to Stone Pavers. Polymeric Sand For Pavement Joints (optional). Polymeric Sand is a high-tech mix of graded sand and binder, specially formulated for the filling of narrow or wide joints when installing pavers or slabs, or when replacing existing joints. Unlike conventional sand, it stays in place and remains stable; this is why it effectively resists erosion caused by water, frost, and wind. In addition, it prevents insect infestation and inhibits weed growth. It stabilizes all horizontal surfaces and sloped work. It softens when it is wet and firms up when it dries to better resist soil movements. It helps keep the surroundings clean by preventing joint sand from getting into the house or pool.
